ESMTP Pipelining
A normal SMTP conversation involves several fragments of data being sent from the client to the server. After each fragment is sent, the client waits for the server to send back an acknowledgement. Once the acknowledgement is received, the client sends the next fragment, and so on... This process is very time consuming because many parts of the Internet make use of high latency network links. The client spends a lot of its time waiting for the server to send back a response. To combat this situation, pipelining may be used. Pipelining allows the client to batch several fragments of data together and send them all at once. The server then sends back one acknowledgement for the combined set of data. Since the fragments and acknowledgements are combined, the client spends less time waiting for the server to respond and can therefore send the message faster.
